Vazhuvoor (or Vizhuvur) is one of the original styles of Bharatanatyam, a major form of Indian classical dance. The main distinctive features include: rich sringar elements. wide range of dancing pace. softer facial abhinaya. Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam which originated in the village of Vazhuvoor. Known actually as Vazhuvoor, this village in the vicinity of Mayiladuturai in Thanjavur district is the native place of Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai, who popularised this style of Bharatanatyam. It is heavy on dramatisation, uses the lasya style, which is softer, graceful movements, has a faster pace in adavus and footwork, and introduces leaps within the dance. This style is based on abhinaya (acting) and soft facial expressions. The body from waist is slightly bent forward. It brings in a fluidity within the movements.
